PAST and present Master Cutlers are backing a campaign to hold a referendum on the proposed European Reform Treaty.

Gordon Bridge, who currently holds the title, and former Master Cutlers Alan Reid, Christopher Jewitt and Neil Turner, gathered at Sheffield City Airport for the Sheffield launch of Yorkshire for a Referendum.

The campaign group brought along a giant ballot box to symbolise the votes of South Yorkshire people.

Victor Watson, chairman of Yorkshire for a Referendum, said: "This new treaty hands over considerable areas of decision making to unelected politicians in Brussels.

"The referendum debate goes to the heart of the way we are governed. We elect our MPs to govern on our behalf - if they want to give away their responsibility to European institutions, they should ask us first."
