Campaign for EU referendum

Nottingham Evening News

A Campaign has been launched in Nottingham calling for a referendum on the EU Treaty.

A giant inflatable ballot box was unveiled on the Victoria Embankment to symbolise the campaigners' demands.

The event was attended by businessmen.

Neville Baxter, of RH Group, leading local businessman and chairman of the campaign, East Midlands for a Referendum, said: "Eight out of ten voters want Gordon Brown to hold the referendum he promised us on the EU Constitution. We intend to make sure that he does.

"Allowing the EU Constitution to go through would mean a huge transfer of power to Brussels which would be irreversible. It would mean even more decisions would be taken behind closed doors, by EU politicians who we don't vote in and can't vote out. We should be able to have a say in this as it will affect our daily lives."

I want a referendum because I've never had a chance to vote on the EU - even though it affects my everyday life.
