Parliament Square protest over EU Treaty
This is Local London
Demonstrators scaled a crane in the capital's Parliament Square in the early hours of Monday in a protest over the EU Treaty.
The activists scaled the structure just after 2am before unfurling banners proclaiming "Referendum Now" and "Give Us Our Vote".
The protest was carried out after a mini-ballot organised by the "I want a Referendum" campaign group, showed that almost 90 percent voters want a referendum on the Lisbon treaty, which aims to reform the EU's institutions.
In a massive public survey carried out by the group, more than 133,000 of the 152,000 people surveyed by the group voted in favour of a national referendum.
It comes two days before MPs are set to vote on a Conservative amendment to the EU Treaty Bill, calling for a referendum on the issue.
